A6 Highway Bridge, Fechingen

The new Fechinger Talbrücke is set to replace an existing 50-year old structurally obsolete bridge carrying Highway A6 over the Fechinger valley. The proposed 420m long structure follows a curved alignment spanning the Saarbach River and the adjacent Saarbrücker Strasse with a 278m cable-stayed main span. The design features a single 108m high inverted-Y shaped tower with twin cable planes anchored at the deck between the east and west bound highways. The deck superstructure is suspended 40m above the valley floor and features a central longitudinal gap, allowing views through up to the tower and visible lightness from populated areas beneath. The bridge is designed to reflect its prominent gateway location on the German-French border.
