The design for a new Brommy Bridge was prepared in response to a theoretical brief set for the triennial conference ‘Footbridge’ hosted in Berlin in 2017. BEaM’s DK office developed a place-specific and forward-looking structure referring to the cultural history of Berlin. Borrowing material technologies from industries such as architectural membranes and naval architecture, the bridge takes the form of a ‘hypar surface structure’. The structure creates a roof over the River Spree simultaneously providing a walk-over landscape and a dynamic covered events space beneath set on and next to the river. The design was presented at Footbridge 2017 and exhibited at the Venice Architecture Bienalle 2018 in the German Pavilion.
